CONCEPT

Our perception of beauty oscillates between two opposing poles. On the one hand, the frantic race for beauty is manifested through cosmetic surgery, cosmetics, and fashion, as well as physical exercise and dieting. On the other hand, in art, beauty is deemed outdated by artists, deconstructed by critics, and surpassed by philosophers. This is one of the most striking curiosities of our time: there is no universal beauty, no beauty in itself. Every form of beauty is relative to an emotional or sensory sensitivity that depends on personal inclination, but also on a cultural context.

The works included in this video composition explore the theme of beauty in three broad directions which, although distinct, are intrinsically linked to the notion of duration: what remains, what changes, and what disappears.

Permanence

There is a beauty and order in nature that are eternal.

Rachel Carson (1907-1964) - Marine biologist and writer

The quest for eternal beauty is a profound human aspiration. Its purpose is the desire for permanence, for everything that resists the vicissitudes of existence: stability, durability, immutability. The video works that follow this path seek to capture the essence of beauty in that which remains, that which does not fear the passage of time: eternal monuments, timeless landscapes, universal symbols, values, ideas, everything that transcends the ages.

Transformation

Life is a matter of constant transformation, and therein lies its beauty.

Lou Andreas-Salomé (1861-1937) - Psychoanalyst and writer

Between disappearance and permanence, there is transformation, that mysterious alchemy that metamorphoses all things, making them both new and familiar. The aesthetic of transformation celebrates the beauty of that which is in perpetual becoming. It is the caterpillar that turns into a butterfly, the seed that becomes a tree, the landscape that transforms with the seasons.

The works explore the beauty of movement, of change. They invite us to see the world as a continuous flux, a ceaseless process of creation and recreation: the cycles of nature, the metamorphoses of bodies, the evolution of societies—all these elements testify to an aesthetic of transformation where nothing is fixed. The works invite us to embrace change, to see beauty in that which evolves.

Disappearance

Beauty is like a field of wheat: it has its time, its harvest, and then it passes away.

George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans, 1819-1880) - Novelist

The opposite of permanence is disappearance. Video works remind us that everything is ephemeral, that even the greatest civilizations eventually collapse. We must be actors/actresses who produce moments to be lived intensely when they present themselves, like so many states of grace within the reach of mortals. A beautiful morning with its low light on the lake, an iridescent soap bubble that makes a child smile—these are moments not to be missed. Or an encounter as intense as it is unexpected, a moment of communion in art or politics: these are other decisive moments. The video works invite us to seize the opportunities that make life worth living, those that are conceived before disappearing in the interstices of time and those that leave behind a trail of melancholic beauty. The artists play with the notions of presence and absence, memory and forgetting to explore the notion of inevitable loss and reveal the beauty of what is transitory, impermanent.
