Concept

If I had influence with the good fairy who presides over the baptism of all children, I would ask that her gift to every child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last a lifetime, like an infallible antidote to boredom and disenchantment in later years.

Rachel Carson (1907-1964) - Marine biologist and ecologist, author of Silent Spring

Wonder in English has several meanings. It is a common noun meaning wonder, astonishment, miracle, marvel, questioning, doubt... It is also a verb—"to wonder"—which translates as: to ask questions, to be curious, or to marvel at something; and also to wonder, expressing doubt or uncertainty. From those who discover the world with wonder-filled eyes to artists seeking to unlock its secrets, "Wonder" is a celebration of creativity. From the smallest living organism to the vast cosmic expanses, including the most ingenious creations of the human mind, wonder is a universal emotion that, according to Plato, lies at the origin of philosophy (Theaetetus 155d).

Our world appears disenchanted and sometimes cynical. Choosing a theme related to wonder might seem out of step with our contemporary mentalities. In the past, natural phenomena, like the constituent elements of our environments, were both strange and disturbing, laden with mystery and imbued with purpose. Rational intelligence, which distances the marvelous, has enabled the development of science and its reassuring explanations for many of the questions facing humanity; the time when humanity saw the marvelous everywhere is long gone. However, there remain fragments of the marvelous in our lives. Their main qualities are to offer us moments of comfort and simple solutions to the complex problems we face.

The Marvelous Beyond Humanity and with It...?

A scientist in his/her laboratory is not a simple technician; he/she is also a child confronted with natural phenomena that impress him/her like fairy tales.

Marie Curie (1867 - 1934) Physicist and chemist, two-time Nobel Prize winner

Our world is a vast network of interactions, a complex weave of relationships between living beings and their environment. In this interdependence lies an inexhaustible source of wonder, which is particularly reflected in our emotions when faced with the forces and beauty of nature.

"It's the first time I've seen something my imagination couldn't embellish."

This phrase, written in Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel Anne of Green Gables (L.C. Page & CO, 1908), offers a definition of wonder that Wonder videos invite us to experience. Through them, we explore the subtle connections that unite us with nature and the living world, and delve into the heart of their intricacies.

WONDER - Maria Papacharalambous (Cyprus - 8)

THE GOLDEN HOUR - Loes Heebink (Netherlands - 9)

CIRCLE - Alessandra Arnò (Italy - 17)

Experiencing wonder requires sharpening our gaze to perceive it and participating in "practical work" to discover the wonder hidden in our daily lives. The city, for example, a place where we live, work, and meet people, is a constantly evolving landscape, a quasi-living organism that changes over time. A mirror of society, it reflects our aspirations, our fears, and our dreams.

WONDER - Ayesha Sultana (Bangladesh - 7)

ORCHESTRATION - Alena Kupcikova (Czech Republic - 23)

Objects, whether utilitarian or artistic, are the fruit of human ingenuity. Witnessing our ability to transform the world around us, to create meaning and beauty, they are wonderful bearers of history, culture, and values.

ROUND TRIP - Cagdas Kahriman (Turkey - 12)

BLUE - Liang Wei (China - 19)

The Marvelous in Humanity

Humanity, take a good look at yourself. Within you, you have heaven and earth, and all of creation. You are a world—everything is hidden within you.

Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) - Mystic, Abbess, Composer, Scientist

If the outside world amazes us with its beauty and mysteries, human beings themselves are an infinite source of fascination.

The body, in its complexity and fragility, is an object of study for a few artists who highlight its raw beauty, its expressive power, but also its vulnerability, like a landscape to explore, an instrument of creation, a place of sensations and emotions.

WONDER BODY - Ligia Bouton (Brazil - 1)

WONDER - Cecilia Vignolo (Uruguay - 21)

Our faces, like our gestures, offer a glimpse of the human soul through the capture of fleeting moments that attest to the wonder of inner richness.

THE REASON FOR HOPE - Véronique Sapin (France / Canada - 10)

DEEP WONDER - C.M.Judge (USA - 14)

VISAGES - Chantal du Pont (Canada - 24)

In the face of adversity, human beings demonstrate a remarkable capacity for resilience. Moments of rupture and reconstruction demonstrate the strength of the human spirit, its ability to rise again, to transform itself.

GAME/HOSPITAL OF TRANSFIGURATION - Zuzanna Janin (Poland - 5)

The Marvelous Interrogated

Being paid to marvel sometimes seems like a heavy responsibility.

Hope Jahren (1969 - ) Geochemist and geobiologist

When the very notion of the marvelous is questioned, the world around us becomes a source of critical reflection on our place within it: the marvelous may be nothing more than a utopia, a simple creation of the imagination, a product of our desires susceptible to manipulation. Videos explore the mechanisms of seduction and illusion, questioning the nature of our desires, or revealing how our mental representations can distort our perception of reality.

KALEIDOSCOPE OF THE REAL - Dagmar Kase (Estonia - 2)

YOU CAN DO IT! - Vesna Bukovec (Slovenia - 6)

IN WHAT WORLD DO YOU WANT TO BE BORN? - Amina ZOUBIR (Algeria - 11)

UNTITLED (CUERO) - Carolina Saquel (Chile/France - 15)

GROWING PAINS - Angelika Rinnhofer (Germany - 16)

KRYPTONITE - Itziar Barrio (Spain - 18)

SKILIFT 1 - Jelena Miskovic (Serbia - 22)

Faced with the illusions and manipulation that dangle the marvelous like a carrot, artists invite us to resist. They encourage us to adopt a posture of distrust and resistance toward appearances or the intellectual habits we adopt by reflex or conditioning.

INCENDIO GARUDA (A Necessary Death) - Laura García (Sibilademente) (Mexico - 3)

WE WATCH YOU - definition 6 - - Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo (Cuba - 4)

Sub-zero YOGASAN, vs. diseases of civilization - Patricija Gilyte (Lithuania - 13)

ASIAN DIKE - Diana Yun (Kazakhstan - 20)
