Concept
Starting in 2007, with the goal of building a more inclusive and supportive artistic community, we invited male artists to participate in a video composition. In addition to proposing a new form of dialogue and collaboration, this video composition is a powerful political and artistic gesture.
Over the years, we have made some changes. In 2007, the proposed theme was "Portrait of an Artist," which we changed to "Tribute to Female Visual Artists" after receiving videos whose interpretation of the word "artist" was a little too broad, including, for example, a female politician. Those that included artists from other art forms (e.g., poetry) were retained. The length also changed. We went from a maximum of 5 minutes to a maximum of 2 minutes, to match the format of the videos for the other compositions.
Whether the artists are known or unknown, public figures or personal muses, each tribute is a window onto the unique relationship the artists have with the work or spirit of the person(s) they celebrate. It is an intimate dialogue, an acknowledgment of influence, and for some, an attempt to fill in the gaps in art history. The theme questions the notion of the muse: from passive object of inspiration to active subject of influence and creative power.
(The numbers associated with the videos indicate their position within the V-composition)
